The river otter is a critically endangered species. In Aanjar, local restaurants and supermarkets complained that these animals were infiltrating their nurseries. This situation almost led to its killing by angry villagers but the Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon (SPNL) intervened. It suggested methods to repel the otters instead, such as fences, scarers and lights. SPNL then proceeded to gather funds for the preservation of the river otter and to develop an action plan for its conservation.
