Recovery and protection of forest animal species of Community interest in the Monte Veciñal en Man Común de Teis (Vigo, Spain)

  • 6. Locally managed ecosystems

In the community of the Monte veciñal en Man Común (Neighbour Woodland) of Teis, located in Vigo, Galicia, we have been recovering the Galician native forest of our peri-urban Monte Veciñal for 20 years. Among others, the measures we have carried out are the eradication of the Blackwood Acacia (Acacia melanoxylon), the reforestation with native species in order to recover the forest autochthonous character and the identification and reporting of spills and pollution points.

Caring for these habitats has been echoed in the conservation and recovery of several protected animal species. Among the species that were absent and have recently returned to the natural ecosystem of our forest, the following stand out:

The genet (Genetta genetta): a forest carnivore listed in Annex V of the EU Habitats Directive (species of Community interest).

The stag beetle (Lucanus cervus): beetle listed in Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive (animal and plant species of Community interest whose conservation requires the designation of special areas of conservation.

The roe deer (Capreolus capreolus)

Among the endangered species that exist in our forest, the golden-striped salamander. stands out, an Iberian endemic species listed in Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive (animal and plant species of Community interest whose conservation requires the designation of special areas of conservation).
